Visa on Arrival up by 33 percent

The Chennai Airport has reported an increase in the Visa On Arrival (VoA) by over 30 per cent in the period from January to September 2013 as compared to the same period last year.

The number of arrivals increased from last year’s 1,538 to 2,029 this year. The VoA scheme was introduced in 2010 in a bid to attract more foreign tourists. Initially, the facility was available only for people from five countries — Finland, Japan, Luxembourg, New Zealand and Singapore — visiting India for tourism purposes. The scheme was later extended to six more countries in January 2011.

In 2013, during January to September period the highest number of VoAs were issued at New Delhi airport (7,830) followed by Mumbai (2,892), Chennai (2,029), Kolkata (968), Bangalore (72), Kochi (33), Hyderabad (23) and Thiruvananthapuram (12).
