The capacity of Uttarakhand’s towns to deal with tourism has been exceeded and projections for domestic and foreign tourist arrivals for 2020 indicate the state’s fragile ecology and poor infrastructure is set to be overwhelmed.
A 2012 study by infrastructure consultant IL&FS exhaustively details how Rishikesh, Dehradun, Mussoorie and Haridwar were bursting at the seams in 2010 itself with little planning or investment for the future.
Dehradun’s existing load in 2010 was 5,57,431 tourists and by 2020, this is expected to rise to 7,30,400. Haridwar was playing host to 2,69,268 and its tourist traffic is estimated to rise to 4,23,755.
