Two-day Auroville festival on Tamil culture

The two-day Auroville and Puducherry festival will begin on Saturday. Mohanam Center for Culture and Heritage with support from the Department of Tourism is organising this festival to promote the cultural heritage and folk history of Tamil Nadu.

S.Elumalai, coordinator, Mohanam Center for Culture and Heritage, said there would be 50 craft stall. Special traditional food would be prepared by women, reports The Hindu. “This festival is a yearly event and will include many cultural programmes,” he said. Bullock cart ride, video of temple festival, storytelling, street theatre by local artists, puppet show, traditional folk dance, kolatam, thappattam, kolam and kummi are part of the programmes.

Along with this, there will also be Arts and Craft Exhibition on village impressions, market (contemporary and traditional craft), food and traditional snacks, traditional food competition and sports events like kabaddi (in collaboration with Auroville Kabaddi team), kho-kho, Sillattam, Kotipul, Thayam, etc.

Mohanam Center was established in 2001 in the surrounding villages of the international township Auroville in the Kaluveli region. It is a cultural heritage centre, being the bridge between the traditional and the modern, the young and the old, Auroville and the villages.
