In a new twist to the MV Leela casino issue, the Goa tourist department has decided to assess the safety measures undertaken by its owner to prevent the vessel from becoming a hazard in the river Mandovi, sources said.
The department had earlier directed the management of the vessel, which is owned by former Haryana minister Gopal Kanda’s company M/s Golden Globe Hotels Pvt Ltd, Gurgaon, to tow it away to a safer place.
The vessel has been berthed in the river for a long time. The department had earlier issued a notice to the company on January 28, 2013, to remove the vessel within a period of 15 days under Section 7 of the Goa tourist places (protection and maintenance) act, 2001.
