In a bid to ensure clean, efficient and cost-effective modes of transport, the State Government is planning to focus more on non-motorised transport by creating bicycle tracks and footpaths, besides improving public transport infrastructure in five cities.
At a workshop titled ‘Sustainable Cities through Transport’ inaugurated by Minister of Municipal Administration and Rural Development, Law, Courts and Prisons K P Munusamy on Thursday, the Corporation Commissioners of Coimbatore, Madurai, Salem, Tirupur and Tiruchy unveiled their plans for the next five years which included greenways, pedestrian zones, cycle tracks and a bus rapid transit system (BRTS).
