Goa and Andaman islands top tourist spots that Puneites are visiting to ring in the New Year, the former tantalizing the younger lot of travelers with its music festivals like the Sunburn. Unlike previous years, international travel this festive season has dropped, rising airfares and economic slowdown putting brakes in people’s plans. But there is much activity on the domestic tourism front. Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC) has several of its 27 resorts in the state booked to capacity from December 25 to January 1, including Ganapatipule, Tarkarli, Mahabaleshwar, Karla, Panshet and Matheran. The highest demand however has been for Ganapatipule and Tarkarli, which have reported 100% occupancy over the last 15 days.
Satish Soni, state director (tourism), MTDC, told TOI that not only did Ganapatipule and Tarkarli have 100% bookings for New Year’s Eve, and the two hot spots are still attracting tourist enquiries. “These two are booked to capacity till January 5. The occupancy status of resorts in both these spots is better than last year, when they were 92% booked during this time of the year in 2012. In addition, the new houseboat facility that was introduced in Tarkarli during mid-2013 has had many takers,” he said.
