Strife in Thailand worries tourists and trade

Thailand has been a popular choice for cost-conscious travellers from the city and around, who usually undertake their first foreign trip to countries like Singapore, Indonesia, Hong Kong or Malaysia. But continuing political strife in Thailand is forcing many to look up other destinations though local travel agents say that it has made a marginal difference.

Admitting that there are certain anxieties about safety and security, Madhuri Deo, the chairperson of Nagpur chapter of Travel Agents Association of India (TAAI), says, “Though the Thai government has given assurances but we too are slightly worried that our tourists should return safely.” Deo says that there have been no significant cancellations and those who had booked earlier are travelling. “We have received only one notification regarding change in timings of cruise by an hour. Most people usually travel to islands or take cruises,” she says.
