Stage Set for Flamingo Fete on Jan 10, 11

NELLORE
The stage is all set for the conduct of colourful “Flamingo Festival” at Nelapattu Bird Sanctuary in Pulicat lake area on January 10 and 11. The event will provide an opportunity to ornithologists, environmentalists, bird watchers, forest and tourism officials to discuss and interact on various aspects aimed at attracting more tourists as well as improving the natural bird habitation.

Pulicat lake, formed by the backwaters of Bay of Bengal, is spread over an area of about 460 sq km spreading over Sulurpet, Doravari Sathram, Vakadu and Kota mandals in Nellore district and another 200 sq km area in Arambaakam, Yellavuru, Gummipoondi areas of Tamil Nadu. It attracts thousands of birds belonging to about 240 varieties from abroad during the winter season. Birds of different hues and colours start arriving in the lake area in October and stay till March before they fly back to their places. This time, the migratory birds seem to have started arriving a bit early as the torrential rains during September have made the lake bigger and more attractive for the birds.
