CHENNAI: South Africa is witnessing a rise in wedding tourism involving overseas Indian families.
It recorded a 27% increase in the number of Indian tourists last year thanks to weddings, reports The Times of India.
Nearly 81,500 Indian nationals visited South Africa till October 2016, of which around 5,000 were from Chennai.
Briefing reporters at a press conference here on Monday, Hanneli Slabber, country head, South African Tourism – India, said there is a huge upsurge from the south, particularly, for smaller marriages.
“Weddings (happening in South Africa) is more a Chennai market than Bengaluru… The smallest wedding that we have done from Chennai was for a group of 60 people,” she said replying to a query on south Indian weddings. The biggest marriage party, wherein the bride hailing from Chennai, had a congregation of 550 people, she added.
Asked about the expenditure for weddings involving Indian families, she said, the average cost for a marriage that had the presence of a small group was Rs 40 lakh.
