Samaikya protests keep tourism industry on tenterhooks

VISAKHAPATNAM
The weather may be playing the perfect host in Araku valley but with the Samaikyandhraagitations sending temperatures soaring, the tourism industry is in for a harrowing time as tourists put their travel plans to this part of the state on hold.

According to industry sources, with agitations resulting in rasta rokos and disruption of traffic, tourist inflow, especially from the neighbouring states of Chhattisgarh, Odisha and West Bengal, has taken a backseat. Along with Araku, sources said that other tourist destinations such as Borra Caves, Ananthagiri, Chaparayi, Jungle Bells and Tyda are also taking a hit due to the low tourist turnout.

According to tourism department sources, two hotels – Mayuri and Yatri Nivas – run by Andhra Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation (APTDC) , which are usually packed this time of the year, have witnessed a drop of nearly 50% in turnout during the last 10 days.
