Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress President Sonia Gandhi took a ride in the first train flagged off from Banihal with many school children. They will be back in the same train soon to address a rally organised by Congress and national conference.
With this, people from Banihal can reach Qazigund in just 12 minutes by train. At present, it takes about one hour fifteen minutes by road to commute between the two locations, that too if there are no traffic jams on the road.
In cost terms, people will have to spend below Rs 20 by train, compared with Rs 150 by a shared Tata Sumo, a railway official said.
