North East sees doubling of growth in foreign tourist visits

An hour’s drive from Guwahati, Pobitora wildlife sanctuary is getting famous for its rhinoceros sightings even as the hornbill festival in the Dzukuo valley of Nagaland is drawing throngs of bird lovers from various parts of the world.

The North East of India is finally turning a new leaf in tourism with the growth of foreign tourists more than doubling for 2013 over the previous year.

“The look east policy of government is paying off. We have held tourist marts in Guwahati and Tawang for travel operators from US, United Kingdom, France and south east Asian countries and taking them on familiarization tours of all the north east states,” a senior government official said.
