BANGALORE
Long-distance buses can continue to travel at high speeds without any checks by the government. After two Volvo fire accidents in Mahbubnagar and Haveri left more than 50 dead, the Karnataka government had promised to introduce speed governors.

In a fresh notification, the government has said vehicles operating on state, national and all-India tourist permits need not install speed governors. The Nov 29 notification exempted eight categories of vehicles from installing speed governors.

Joint commissioner (transport) Yeshwanth Kumar told TOI the notification was issued to avoid any confusion till central government’s notification on mandatory speed governors comes into effect on April 1. “The latest state government notification will be in effect till March 31, 2014,” the commissioner explained.
