The newly-elected government in Maldives is likely to ease visa restrictions imposed on visitors from India. President Abdullah Yameen’s government’s possible move is meant to boost tourism and defence partnership with India. Male also plans to amend foreign investment laws to encourage additional investments from its biggest neighbour.
Yameen, who will be in New Delhi in the last week of December, on his first trip abroad as President, is expected to discuss mutual easing of consular and visa restrictions that would benefit tourists from India and boost defence cooperation. The two countries will also discuss new projects and initiatives during the presidential visit following the invitation extended by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Yameen’s spokesperson Ibrahim Muaz Ali told ET from Male on Thursday.
