Tourism officials and stake holders of tourism industry in Madurai are elated over the rising tourist inflow to Madurai district. They say the combined efforts of the district administration and the city corporation have finally succeeded, said tourism officials.
Provision of facilities for tourists and promotion of tourist centres in the city have helped in the spurt in tourist arrivals, trade experts said.
The number of domestic tourists and foreign tourists visiting Madurai has increased in the last three years, said tourism officials. The data available with the district tourism office shows that 56 lakh domestic tourists visited Madurai in 2010. Next year it rose to 66 lakh and the count stood at 90 lakh in 2012. Even the prevalence of dengue in Madurai district last year did not affect tourist inflow.
As many as 90,000 foreign tourists visited Madurai in 2012. The number was a mere 56,000 in 2010. Already about 75,000 tourists have arrived from abroad this year. Most tourists visit between October and March, which is considered to be good season to visit the district.
