Kochi corp starts with ferry

KOCHI
With plans to develop ferry services connecting various islands in the Greater Cochin area, the Kochi corporation is going forward with the concept of integrating the urban transport system in the city. The local body will prepare a detailed project report (DPR) based on a pre-feasibility urban transport study conducted by the international agency, City Development Initiative for Asia (CDIA). The civic body will submit the DPR to the Centre seeking funds, especially under the Jawaharlal Nehru Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) scheme.

CDIA has submitted a proposal to finance packages under four categories at an estimated cost of US$137 million (about Rs 822 crore at the current exchange rate of Rs 60). These include the development of ferry services, bus services, pedestrian precincts and pay and park and other capital-intensive works for the Greater Cochin area.
