Kerala tourism plays up Lulu Mall

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM

Backwaters. Marine Drive. Fort Kochi. Jewish Synagogue. Bolgatty Palace. Willingdon Island. Chinese nets. Kerala Tourism has now officially added one more to the long list of must-see attractions in Kochi: Lulu Shopping Mall. This is the first time a private enterprise has been officially granted the pride of place as a tourist attraction.

The August issue of Kerala Tourism’s official monthly newsletter, in an article devoted to M.A. Yusuf Ali’s mall, introduces Lulu as a “giant crystal palace with ceilings and sides made of spider fitting glass.”  The article then  lists the “wonders” held in the mall’s massive 2.5-million-sq-feet spread over three floors. The article even ends like a professional sales pitch: “Undoubtedly, Lulu has become the last word for shopping in  God’s Own Country.”

Tourism Secretary Suman Billa said that the newsletter was published by the Tourism Department and that he was unaware of the Lulu promotional. “On the face of it, it does not look proper,” Billa said.
