Kerala to woo seaplane operators with incentives

KOCHI

The State government is expected to offer fresh incentives to woo seaplane operators. New guidelines in this regard will be announced soon, sources in the industry told The Hindu.

At least three operators are waiting to launch flights in the State, considered a region with great tourism potential. An operator based in Kochi has already purchased a new aircraft. The seaplane, capable of accommodating 10 people on board, needs infrastructure to land on seashores or lakes. A controversy had erupted in connection with the construction of waterdromes in lakes where fishing activities were thriving. Fishermen had threatened to launch an agitation against the operations alleging that it would affect fishing.

The government had set up an expert committee to study the issues raised by the fishermen. The panel recommended extension of facilities to improve the lot of fishermen. Though concrete steps were yet to be taken to sort out the issue, the government had announced certain early-bird incentives to attract prospective seaplane operators.
