Hudhud: Odisha hotels hit, tourists cancel bookings

GOPALPUR-ON-SEA, ODISHA

Cyclone Hudhud has hit the hotel industry in Ganjam district at the start of the tourist season, a time when hotels are usually packed with tourists reports Times of India. Most hotels, including starred hotels, in Gopalpur and Berhampur cities are reporting bookings of under 10 per cent of the inventory. Gopalpur has about 20 small and starred hotels and Berhampur has about 50.

Besides the wide beaches at Gopalpur, the hot water springs at Taptapani, Taratarini temple, Buddha temple at Jirang in Gajapati, Berhampur patta saree are among the others tourist attractions in the  area. Around 10,000 domestic and foreign tourists visit Gopalpur during peak season as per industry figures.

“Since the Met department sounded the cyclone warning, around 60-70 per cent bookings were cancelled. Even if the intensity is comparatively lower than Phailin, we have persuaded the occupants to vacate the hotels as it would be difficult for us to provide full fledged services to the customers,” said the manager of a starred hotel.
