Goa tourist season picks up steam

GOA
After a quiet start to the tourism season in mid-October, the tourism industry has suddenly witnessed a spurt in arrivals with thousands of domestic tourists adding to the numbers over the weekend.

Tourist spots in North Goa, especially the Candolim-Calangute-Baga stretch, were crowded with tourists. Panaji too experienced traffic jams on the weekend during peak hours, as the number of vehicles with tourists coming from other states added to the flow on the roads. In Old Goa, the increase in tourists is noticeable as the foot falls around the monuments has gone up.

Goa tourism development corporation (GTDC), which has 11 residencies at popular tourist spots, had more than 70% occupancy. AGTDC official said occupancy at its residencies is higher this year than in the corresponding period last season. “The crowd this year is certainly more than last year,” he said.

The overall growth rate in arrival of domestic and international tourists is up by about 10%.
