Train travel in India has often been touted as a sort of bourgeois revolution — a medium on which the poorest of the poor commute, a lifeline that connects one end of the nation to another. Little wonder, the fare per km on the Indian Railway network is one of the cheapest in the world.
Yet, for all the impoverished notions, there is another side to Indian Railways that enthuses and excites travelers, especially those who arrive from overseas. On the extreme end of the spectrum, Indian Railways runs a bunch of luxury trains, a ride on which is among the costliest experiences in India.
