Garbage rots at Kolkata’s Victoria

The Victoria Memorial may be the centerpiece of the city’s tourism circuit, but those visiting Kolkata during the post-festive season will return with bitter memories of the royal monument. For, the scenic beauty of the colossal building is marred by a heap of garbage accumulated at a corner of the Victoria premises. If not for anything else, the tourists will definitely remember the city for its indifference towards the heritage structure.

Worse still, there’s little possibility of the heap being cleaned up any time soon, thanks to an ongoing blame game between Victoria authorities and the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC). While the custodians of Victoria claimed the KMC hadn’t sent a vat to collect the garbage, civic officials countered that clearing garbage from within the premises wasn’t their job.
