For decades, its been a mystery – a lovely palace in the middle of the lake as you drive into Jaipur from Delhi. Jal Mahal was built as a summer palace in the middle of a lake created by damming a depression. It has been renovated and refurbished by many rulers of Amer, the local principality. There had been no way to reach it, till it was restored a few years ago. The palace, built in red sandstone, is a five storied building out of which four floors remain under water when the lake is full and the top floor is exposed.
