Fisherfolk oppose mechanised beach-cleaning machines

PANAJI
The Goenchea Ramponkarancho Ekvott(GRE), body spearheading the cause of traditional fisherfolk communities on Wednesday vowed to oppose the use of mechanised cleaning machines on the beaches of Goa.

GRE has urged the Government to withdraw this proposal with immediate effect. Already, the proposal has been opposed by those presently doing this work on contract, manually.

Jt. Secretary of GRE Olencio Simoes told The Hindu on Wednesday this was because the use of such machines would damage all forms of life present in the sand dunes and also ultimately flatten the sand dunes, thereby causing irreparable loss to the eco-system.
