Encroachments denying Hyderabad monuments Unesco tag?


HYDERABAD
Charminar may be synonymous with Hyderabad but it seems that the iconic structure has come in the way of the city monuments bagging a Unesco world heritage tag, or so says the Indian government.

Tourism minister Chiranjeevi, during a meeting with the culture ministry officials, pushed for Hyderabad’s nomination to the conference of the World Heritage Committee next year as Andhra Pradesh does not have a single world heritage site yet. However, the officials did not show much interest as Charminar abounds with encroachment and management issues.

The ministry of culture, which sends entry on behalf of the Indian government every year to the Unesco world heritage committee (WHC), has already nominated Gujarat’s Rani Ki Vav (Queen’s Stepwell) for 2014.
