In keeping with West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s dream of “turning Kolkata into London”, the state transport department is set to reintroduce double-decker buses on Kolkata streets.
“We’re trying to bring back the double-decker buses which were once an intrinsic part of our city. It’ll be a step towards fulfilling the chief minister’s dream of turning Kolkata into London,” state transport minister Madan Mitra said.
The buses were first introduced in the city by the British way back in 1926, but were phased out during the Left Front rule starting in the early 1990s, when the then government found them non-viable.
