The Supreme Court has ordered demolition of a restaurant constructed by Aluva municipality in Kerala on a reclaimed part of Periyar river and said raising structures on the river bed was in breach of the government’s primary obligation to protect the environment.
Association of Environment Protection, an NGO, had challenged the Aluva municipality’s decision to construct a restaurant on reclaimed land on the river bank. The municipality had claimed it was for the benefit of public coming for the Shivratri festival.
