Deadline confusion costs hotel industry Rs 100cr

MUMBAI
The initial refusal of Mumbai Police to extend bar and restaurant timings from 1.30am to 5am for New Year’s Eve may have cost the hospitality industry around Rs 100 crore in the Mumbai region. Hoteliers said the confusion resulted in fewer footfalls as several people had already made plans for a party at home or outside the city.

Bar owners said their estimates indicated that liquor sales on December 31, 2013, were around 9-10 lakh litres against 11-12 lakh litres on December 31, 2012. Excise officials said they were yet to calculate the exact figures but admitted preliminary reports indicated there was a drop in turnout at hotels and restaurants.
