Daman tourism in bad shape

DAMAN
Thanks to the apathy of the local civic body and the administration that Daman – a former Portuguese enclave remains a mere tipplers’ destination, a water hole of south Gujarat.Though the administration claims to have come up with a blue print to provide a major facelift for attracting more tourists from Gujarat and neighbouring Maharashtra, tourism is in bad shape at present.

The sea front at Nani Daman is an eyesore and it requires a proper clean up. Even the bus terminus where a visitor gets down does not offer a local map, proper signs for going to the various destinations with the exact distances written on them. “The general impression about the place is that people just come here from dry Gujarat and Maharashtra to drink. While alcohol is not available legally in Gujarat, the low excise duty on alcoholic drinks attracts people from Maharashtra,” a local resident said.

An hotelier pointed that very little has been done to promote other places of attraction in this Union Territory. “We have a civic body and an administration. But the feeling is that the administrative officials coming from Delhi and elsewhere are simply not interested in developing the place as a prime tourist destination.” The administration on the other hand claims to have put in place beautification plan of Daman following instructions from administrator of Daman & Diu and Dadra and Nagar Haveli Bhupinder Bhalla.
