Coasts encroached upon by resorts: Panel

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM
An expert committee appointed by the Coastal Zone Management Authority has reportedly found that several resorts have also fenced off public property, including beaches and parks, and are dumping waste water into the sea.

It had inspected 31 resorts in all earlier this month. The report has also sparked off a flurry of protests with the affected parties and Kerala Hotel and Restaurants Association alleging victimisation. “These constructions have been there for years, many are 15-20 years old. The inspection and report target only one section of society even though houses, religious institutions and other institutions fall within the said area, Cyriac Kodoth, EIA co-ordinator for the Vizhinjam Port Tourism Affected, alleged.
