What’s in a name? A lot, if you ask the chief ministers of Haryana and Punjab, when it comes to naming the upcoming international airport near Chandigarh. While participating in a panel discussion on Sunday as part of TOI’s ‘Chandigarh: Back to the Future’ campaign on the occasion of the newspaper’s 175th anniversary, two stakeholders of the City Beautiful — Bhupinder Singh Hooda and Parkash Singh Badal — gave the best of their arguments for renaming the upcoming international airport with their choices. While Hooda rooted for International Airport ‘Chandigarh’, Punjab CM Badal preferred International Airport ‘Mohali’.
“To protect the original character and chemistry of Chandigarh, we should go ahead with naming the upcoming airport after Chandigarh. Since it’s Chandigarh airport and we are also a stakeholder, let it be Chandigarh only,” a visibly aggressive Hooda said. “Since the physical location of the airport would be in Mohali, naming it as international airport Mohali would be most appropriate,” Badal responded.
