Bridge work delay a blow to tourism

Though slated to finish by December 2012, it looks like it will take another year from now for the work of the 250-metre Kodanad-Malayattoor bridge to complete.

Upon completion, the bridge will connect the Malayattoor pilgrim spot with Kodanad and channelise pilgrim tourism from Malayattoor to other key sites in Perumbavoor. The proposed bridge will also reduce the distance between several other tourism sites in the state such as Munnar and Athirappally waterfalls with spots like St Thomas Church Malayattoor, Ezhattumugham nature village, Mulankuzhi waterfalls, forest tracks of Panyeli Poru, sacred groves of Iringole Kavu, Kalil Cave temple and Kodanad Elephant Training Centre

Though the contractors blame bad weather for the slow work, residents allege that the delay is deliberate. Sivan, a resident of Malayattoor, said if the work goes at this pace it will take at least one-and-half years to complete the construction.
