Boat carrying tourists capsizes in Andaman

Twenty-one people were killed after a tourist boat capsized in the Bay of Bengal in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands on Sunday, official sources said.The boat called Aqua Marine was carrying around 45 people comprising tourists from Kanchipuram district of Tamil Nadu and Mumbai as well as crew members. It sank on its way from Ross Island to North Bay.

The South Andaman district administration confirmed 21 deaths and said 13 people were rescued. The civil administration and defence establishments such as the Coast Guard conducted rescue operations, the sources said.

“Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has expressed shock over the boat tragedy in the Andamans and has condoled the loss of lives,” a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office said.
