“We came here to relax and be by ourselves,” says Valerie Orlov of Moscow, as she walks through the narrow, sandy pathways at Shiroda beach in Sindhudurg. “We love Goa, but sadly, it’s getting too congested and crowded.”
Her Russian friends, walking alongside her, nod in agreement. “There are hardly any people here. The beach is so clean, there are trees lined up along the beach for shade… We looked up this place on the internet and decided to come here to spend the day,” says Orlov.
Not far away are a clutch of huts, all inhabited by foreign tourists. For them, the beaches of Sindhudurg are new, rejuvenating and refreshing. Goans say the Shiroda beach resembles Goa’s Miramar beach in Panaji as seen till the early 90s-until its sand dunes and tree cover were destroyed.
