Unprecedented rains coupled with rough seas have buried beaches from Andhakaranazhi on the Alappuzha-Ernakulam border to Cherai in the north in ankle-deep debris washed ashore by the waves.
Most of them were deserted Tuesday, July 2 afternoon as facilities such as beach umbrellas have fallen in heavy winds that continue to rake up sand sprays.
Fort Kochi looked the worst of the lot. The large beach area that has been formed recently as the walkway takes a sharp turn to the south lay buried in debris that includes plastic bottles and ghost nets. None of the tourists appeared keen to walk into the sea wading through the debris. They preferred to sit along the sea wall clicking away at the sea that kept pounding the granite wall.
