KOCHI: Kerala tourism sector will have to face tough competition from Thailand, a famous tourism destination known for its natural wonders and sex tourism, from this year.
The Thailand Tourism authorities have decided to conduct road shows in Kerala as part of promoting the tourist destination as a family-friendly destination in the God’s Own Country, reports The New Indian Express.
This assumes great significance given the fact that around one million Indian tourists have visited Thailand last year, despite a survey conducted among tourists showing that Indian housewives are reluctant to send their better-halves to Thailand due to the sex tag attached to the destination.
According to Immigration Bureau, Royal Thai Police, India is the sixth largest contributor to the Thailand Tourism sector, followed by China, Malaysia, Laos, Japan and Korea.
Thailand’s attempt to promote the tourist destination would affect the domestic tourism sector of the God’s Own Country, as they are now focusing on family trip, destination weddings, holiday makers during long weekends, women travellers, corporate/ incentive groups, special interest groups such as golfers, bilkers, divers, etc.
Stung by the sex tag attached to the renowned holiday destination, the TAT authorities are on an attempt to make Thailand family and women-friendly.
“We have appointed VJ Anusha Dandekar as our Brand Ambassador to promote Thailand as women’s destination. We also have Vani Kapoor, leading lady golfer in India, as our Thailand Golf Ambassador in India, said Soraya Homchuen, Director, Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), in charge of Western and Southern India, Sri Lanka and Maldives.
