Assam govt seeks stars for ‘Awesome Assam’

GUWAHATI: The government is in talks with cricketer Sachin Tendulkar and Bollywood actors Ranbir Kapoor, Deepika Padukone and Priyanka Chopra to promote ‘Awesome Assam’.

“We are talking to Sachin, Ranbir, Deepika and Priyanka. However, nothing is finalised yet. It has a long way to go. Sachin has informed that he already has several prior commitments,” Assam tourism minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said, reports The Economic Times.

He further said, “This venture will necessitate a huge fund and will take some time before we zero in on one of these personalities. Assam has to be promoted aggressively at national and international level to promote tourism.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is upbeat about the tourism potential of Northeast India. He has on his visits to Assam eulogised the natural beauty of the state.

Assam has recorded an increase in domestic and foreign tourists in the past few years.

While the number of domestic tourists went up to 56,42,950 in 2015-16 from 9,61,954 in 2000-01, the number of foreign tourists increased to 26,320 from 6,490 during this period. The state earned Rs 90,81,576 through tourism in 2015-16.
