ASI for new administrative circle in UP

LUCKNOW
The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has proposed a new administrative circle in UP. At present the state has two circles – at Lucknow and Agra. The proposed circle would comprise Varanasi and adjoining 12 districts.

Deputy director general, ASI, BR Mani said a proposal in this regard is being prepared. He said the proposal would be sent to the Central government soon for approval and added that similar proposals are being prepared for Jodhpur and Nagpur as well. Sources said ASI framed the proposal after local groups working for heritage issues raised the demand. Some political groups too extended support to this.

The reason that convinced ASI was a practical problem faced by its officials in Patna circle. To initiate any restoration work or cope up with problems like encroachment, ASI officials in Patna circle have to make frequent visits to the districts. These initiatives require no objection certificates (NoC) from senior officials like divisional commissioners and district magistrates.
