The city’s wait for its only public aquarium, which was closed down over two years ago for renovation, continues indefinitely with the authorities not being able to give a specific date or deadline for its reopening.
The District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC) closed down the aquarium, which was functioning at a 10-cent facility leased out by the Corporation on the beach, for a major overhaul.
The renovation work was handed over to the Small Industries Development Corporation (SIDCO) in April 2012. SIDCO sublet the contract for electrical and civil work, including restoration of the crumbling structure, building of compound wall, flooring, and painting the premises, to private contractors.
