IndiGo, India’s largest airline by market share, has been the biggest gainer in the flash sale announced by airlines on January 21, followed by Air India and SpiceJet, according to an analysis done by travel portal Yatra.com.
While airlines did not disclose the number of seats sold, Yatra said bookings on its site had jumped by “over 300%” in the last three days since the scheme was announced.
Gurgaon-based low-cost carrier (LCC) SpiceJet was the first to announce a 50% discount on tickets in an attempt to fill seats during the lean season. The sale period was between January 21 and 23 for travel up to April 15.
The two other LCCs, IndiGo and GoAir, soon started matching SpiceJet’s fares and full-service carriers Air India and Jet Airways joined the bandwagon as well.
